The Sinfulness of Sin

Today I’m going to give you an overview of the rest of Matthew chapter 5.

It’s a large text for us today—verses 21-48.

Jesus covers a lot of material in this one setting.

Jesus talks about six issues:

Murder

Adultery

Divorce

Truth

Making Promises

Love

But before we get to those specific topics—because they are weighty—they are serious things—

Before we get to those topics, I need to provide a high-level overview of all of that.

Because if we don’t understand the context—if we don’t understand where Jesus is coming from, we’ll dismiss His words and miss the overarching theme of forgiveness.

And if we miss the theme of forgiveness, we’ll miss the application of forgiveness to our own lives!

So that’s where we're headed today, and then next week, we’ll dive into those six sections verse by verse.
